DIY Upgrade: SV226P – A smart way to retrofit existing filter drawers
With the new SV238 OAG off-axis guider, Svbony has usefully expanded its accessory lineup, specifically targeting ambitious astrophotographers. However, this new product comes with a minor limitation: The OAG is compatible only with the newer SV226P filter drawer—the widely used SV226 is not supported.
But instead of investing directly in new hardware, there’s a much more elegant solution.
I’ve developed a practical and cost-effective method that allows you to convert your existing SV226 filter drawer into the SV226P version with minimal effort. This project is intended for anyone with a bit of DIY skill who enjoys optimizing their own equipment.

What do you need?
This conversion requires only a few tools and materials:
a suitable drilling template (3D-printed)
a cordless screwdriver or a drill
an M3 tap
a center punch
Suitable screws (DIN912 M3x12 cylinder head screws)
With the exception of the cordless screwdriver, all the necessary parts can usually be purchased at a hardware store for less than 10 €.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Preparation
Print out the drilling template and carefully position it on the filter drawer. Make sure it is precisely aligned—this is crucial for a clean result.

Step 2: Drilling and Tapping
Use the drilling template to pre-drill the designated holes, then tap the M3 threads. Work carefully and with a light touch—the aluminum of the filter drawer is relatively soft, and the threads can quickly become rough. It’s best to use some cutting oil or spiritus as a lubricant.

Step 3: Assembly
Now assemble all the components. Important: Use screws that are shorter than the original ones supplied by Svbony, as these are about 2–3 mm too long and may otherwise cause problems.

Get some shorter screws, and the problem is solved 👍

3D Printing File
The drilling template you need is available for download as a 3D printing file on Thingiverse. You can find the link here:
Conclusion
With this simple DIY modification, you can efficiently upgrade your existing SV226 filter drawer and make it compatible with the SV238 OAG. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also give your existing equipment a useful upgrade—quickly, easily, and with peace of mind.
